Set in a beautiful Mediterranean setting, “Swept Away” is Lina Wertmüller’s most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On a luxury yacht sailing off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella (Mariangella Melato), a wealthy and glamorous tycoon, delights in torturing a communist sailor, Generino (Giancarlo Giannini). Fate has a different plan, and the roles are reversed when the two are stranded together on a desert island. Raffaella must surrender to Generino in order to survive, which culminates in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must decide whether their love can overcome the harsh realities of civilization.
