In a remote village, two brothers discover a demon-infested man who is about to “give birth” to evil itself. They decide to dispose of the body, but unwittingly end up spreading chaos. During a Q&A with the audience following the Fantastic Fest premiere, director Demián Rugna said he got the idea for When Evil Lurks from a series of news stories about farm pesticides in his native Argentina causing widespread health problems. He suggests that corporate apathy towards workers’ health and the way the problem emerged in the “middle of nowhere,” where it’s easy for profit-seekers and city dwellers to ignore the impact of their choices, led him to think about the idea of lurking evil spreading. Ruiz aims a shotgun at a goat. When viewed from behind the gunman, the goat’s horns appear to grow from the man’s head. While it’s a clever punch, the horns aren’t shaped correctly at any other angle for that to happen. Mierta: Evil loves children. And children love evil. A seriously underrated film. I watched the original version with Spanish subtitles, and I think that’s the best way to watch. Anyway, if you were expecting gore and horror, prepare to be disappointed, because seriously, this film delivers! That said, it does have its flaws, first of all, this is obviously meant to be the beginning of a franchise (you’ll understand that after watching the cliffhanger ending), however, this small production from Argentina. the film isn’t afraid to hurt anyone’s feelings. I can tell you for sure that this is the best it gets, just don’t expect the sequel to be half as good.
